Executive Summary

Between 2017 and 2018, the Egyptian Navy executed a large-scale port and naval base development project in Gargoup, Matrouh, Egypt, aimed at enhancing maritime and naval capabilities along Egypt’s western coast.

The project covered a total area of 2,500 feddan, with a built-up area of 80,000 m², and included major marine and infrastructure works such as quay walls, breakwaters, dredging, and buildings.

The project was characterized by high construction productivity, advanced marine works, and the deployment of a large workforce to meet the demanding coastal and operational requirements.

Project Description

The scope of work for the Gargoup Port and Naval Base project included the following key components:

  • Gravity Block Quay Wall
    • Length: 1,000 m
    • Draught: 14.5 m
  • Main Breakwater
    • Length: 1,600 m
    • Design Depth: –20 m
  • Extensive marine, civil, and infrastructure works, including dredging and port facilities.
  • Buildings and service structures supporting naval and port operations.
  • Use of approximately 2,000 tons of reinforcement steel rebar in marine and civil works.
  • Average daily concrete production: 3,000 m³/day
  • Average daily rock supply and handling: 25,000 tons/day
  • Peak manpower: 4,000 personnel

Client Challenge

The Egyptian Navy faced the challenge of delivering a multi-functional naval base in a harsh Mediterranean environment, requiring durable breakwaters, high daily concrete and rock production, effective coordination of large-scale marine and civil works across 2,500 feddan, and management of a large workforce while maintaining safety and quality standards.
