Dabaa marine port
Executive Summary
In 2019, the Egyptian Navy commissioned the development of a strategic naval port and base in Dabaa, Matrouh, Egypt, to reinforce maritime operations and coastal defense in the western region.
Covering an area of 1,100 hectares with a built-up space of 80,000 m², the project integrated advanced marine and structural works, including quay walls, breakwaters, dredging, and heavy infrastructure.
Project Description
Key scope elements included:
-
Gravity Block Quay Wall
- Length: 300 m
- Draught: 8 m
-
Main Breakwater
- Length: 1,250 m
- Armor: 24t Tetrapods
- Depth: –18 m
-
Secondary Breakwater
- Length: 565 m
-
Dredging Works
- Quantity: 1 million m³
- Daily Capacity: 1,000 CuM concrete and 15,000 tons rock supply
- Use of approximately 2,000 tons of steel for marine and structural works.
- Activities included concrete, steel, marine, piling, soil improvement, and building works.
- Specialized equipment including 600-ton and 1,200-ton cranes supported the execution of large-scale marine and structural elements.
Client Challenge
The Egyptian Navy faced the challenge of delivering a multi-purpose naval base in a demanding marine environment while addressing: Construction of deep and long breakwaters designed to withstand high wave energy using heavy tetrapod armor. Managing large-scale dredging operations and continuous rock/concrete production to meet schedule targets. Coordinating simultaneous activities across a vast 1,100-hectare area, including marine, structural, and utility works. Ensuring infrastructure resilience to support both naval operations and future port expansion. Through advanced engineering, efficient logistics, and deployment of heavy-duty construction equipment, the Dabaa naval base project was successfully executed, strengthening Egypt’s western maritime defense infrastructure.
